The Malt Shovel Inn, free house, real ales, real food, real people. Probably has the most awesome views in Shropshire. A definate place for people to stop and recharge their batteries in a most tranquil establishment.
'Little Hill' was the original name of the land upon which now stands The Malt Shovel.
A house was first built here in around 1684. In the late 18th century the Perry family lived and farmed here and in the early 19th century the porter family occupied it.
The first mention of The Malt Shovel was in 1896 when it is said to have been a public house since 1863. The original 16th century farmhouse has been altered and added to with the house previously facing West with views over the Clee Hills.
Wendy Ashwell from The Shropshire Star Review Wrote:
"There we found The Malt Shovel at Highley, slightly hidden off the main road with a beautiful front garden. This public house also has the most fantastic views from its dining area of the Clee Hills. A lovely place to sit with a meal and a glass of whatever you fancy.
The landlord has taken the name of his beloved pub into his kitchen. Among other choices on the menu, the mixed grill seems to be exceptionally popular. So much so, this exceptionally filling meal is literally served on a malt shovel.
This is most definately a real pub serving real food with real people".
From Bridgnorth and Kidderminster head for Highley. Once in Highley, remain on the main road until you see a pub called the Castle. The Malt Shovel Inn is located directly behind the Castle Inn.
