A day’s visit to Ironbridge allows you to take in 4
of the 10 Museum sites in the beautiful
Ironbridge
Gorge, one of Britain’s great World Heritage Sites
and the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution.
As the sites are spread over six square miles, transport will be required to take you between sites.
10.0 Arrive at Blists Hill Victorian Town
The Museum is a recreation of life in a Victorian community. Working factories, shops and cottages are authentic to the era, as are the ‘townsfolk’. Change your money at the Bank for Victorian tokens to spend in the shops, or take a pint of ale in the New Inn Public House. The sights, smells and sounds of late Victorian working machinery are on show as the last remaining wrought ironworks in the country run regularly throughout the summer.
12.0 Lunch in Blists Hill café/restaurant (near car park)
13.15 Arrive at The Iron Bridge and Tollhouse
No visit to Ironbridge would be complete without walking across the famous bridge. The great symbol of the success of the iron industry can be found at the heart of the small town that bears it’s name. Cast in 1779 by Abraham Darby the 3rd, it’s great arch enthralled visitors who came from all over the world to admire it’s construction, as they still do today.
14.00 Arrive at The Museum of The Gorge
A short walk from the Iron Bridge, along side the River Severn, this Gothic warehouse is where the goods from the Coalbrookdale Company began their journey. A 40 ft scale model of the river valley as it was in 1796 can be seen at the Museum.
Alternatively
14.00 Visit Coalport China Museum
The former Coalport Factory offers demonstrations in a range of techniques including making bone china roses. The National Collections of Coalport and Caughley china are displayed in the original riverside buildings.
Hands on workshops are held regularly.
15.00 Arrive at Enginuity
This new edition to the Gorge Museums is an attraction for all ages. Named Family Attraction of the Year 2003, the interactive, hands-on centre unravels the workings of everyday objects. Find out how to pull a locomotive, control water to generate electricity, even look inside everyday objects such as mobile phones and teddy bears by pulling a stimulated x-ray machine over them.
