Tennis is Art Lecture at Coalbrookdale Museum of Iron (8th September 2011)

As part of the Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust’s Science Sport Life Programme, the Museum is hosting a fascinating lecture on Tennis in Art, presented by Professor Ann Sumner, Director of the Barber Institute of Fine Art, on Wednesday 14th September 2011 at 7.30pm in the Boardroom at Coalbrookdale Museum of Iron.

In the lecture Professor Sumner explores tennis inspired paintings from the early Victorian conversation pieces by the Hayllar sisters through to the pop artist Tom Phillips’, ‘The Seven Ages of Man’, a piece created from seven tennis balls covered with the artist’s own hair. She discusses the opportunity that the early game gave young woman to exercise freely on freshly mown lawn tennis courts and the artists who portrayed them, as well as the increasing popularity of the game in the 20th century during the interwar years.

The lecture is based on the highly acclaimed exhibition Court on Canvas that runs until 18th September at The Barber Institute of Fine Art.

Steve Miller Chief Executive at the Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust commented; “It is a great honour for the Museum to be able to welcome such a distinguished speaker as Professor Sumner, as part of our Sport Science Life Programme. It is just one more example of how the 2012 Games and the Cultural Olympiad are bringing outstanding cultural opportunities to every part of the country. There is an open invitation to everybody to come and join us for what I am sure will be a wonderful lecture.”

Admission to the lecture is free of charge and pre-booking is not required. Call 01952 433424 for details.
