Victorian Halloween at Hawkstone Park Historic Follies (21st October 2011)

Scary Victorian tales will be brought to life in a ghostly Halloween walk around one of Shropshire’s leading tourist attractions. The spooky Trip to Hades around the caves and woods of The Follies at Hawkstone Park in Weston-under-Redcastle, Shrewsbury, will get underway at 6pm on Saturday, October 29.

Ghosts, ghouls and axe murderers will be played by actors on the bewitching evening walk which takes around 90 minutes.

Visitors will then be able to take part in a disco in the park and watch a fireworks display to round off the evening, which costs £10 per person.

Roger Whitehouse, park manager at the Follies at Hawkstone Park, said this year’s theme is dedicated to the Victorian era.

“There are some great Victorian Halloween tales such as the werewolf, Count Dracula and other obscure tales that were told to children in great houses to keep them in their beds during Halloween and stop any misbehaving,” he said.

“When you study the history of Halloween it is not just about trick and treat – it could be a frightening experience.

“Film producer and director Ben Mars, who is originally from Shropshire, will be bringing along a few of his acting friends to help us tell the story throughout the Trip to Hades and make people occasionally jump!

“We have set up the walk around the park and the emphasis is on everyone having fun, fun, fun on Halloween.

“We would advise people to bring torches and wear sensible shoes since they will be walking in the woods and this is an event that is not really suitable for children under the age of nine.

“The event will be rounded off with a fantastic fireworks display in the Grand Valley to light up the sky above Hawkstone Park.”

The first walk starts at 6pm and last entry is at 8pm. Tickets are available (excluding food from the BBQ and drinks) by telephoning 01948 841700 and booking in advance is recommended.
