British Sausage Week 2011 (1st November 2011)

British Sausage Week 2011

Ludlow is renowned for sausages and at the Ludlow Food Centre, John Brereton and his team of butchers, are making a different sausage every day for British Sausage Week.

Now in its 14th year, British Sausage Week is the most recognised food week in the retailer calendar, according to The Grocer.  Furthermore the great British banger is the nation’s favourite meat-based dinner, outselling chicken or minced beef and accounting for a staggering 854 million meals every year.  Ludlow is renowned for sausages and at the Ludlow Food Centre, John Brereton and his team of butchers, are making a different sausage every day for British Sausage Week.

John says, ‘We make a wide variety of sausages using pork from our herd of Pedigree Gloucester Old Spots.  We thought it would be fun to do a new sausage every day of Sausage Week and see if the customers can guess the ingredients.  We are giving away a prize every day to the lucky person who gets the right ingredients’

The sausage is a firm favourite of some of the nation’s most recognised figures including the likes of Craig Revel-Horwood, Christine Hamilton, Phil Tufnell, Paul Daniels and Debbie McGee and Dickie Bird.  This year Noddy Holder is fronting the Sausage Week campaign and visiting producers all over the country in the search for the best banger.

The national competition started in August and John has made it to the regional final in Birmingham, ‘It’s great to have got through and I hope we can perform well in Birmingham on November 3rd. Our Traditional Sausage has been selected by the judges and will go head to head with a selection of others from the Midlands’

During the year to June 2011 we ate 191,040 tonnes of sausages worth £667.4 million and every day five million Britons will eat sausages so they are an extremely important part of our diets and the economy.  Sausages are a firm favourite with children but the Sausage Week campaign is also trying to get the population to eat good quality sausages.  In Ludlow a group of school children from Ludlow School will get the opportunity to make their own at the Ludlow Food Centre.  John says, ‘It’s nice to involve the next generation and show them where their food comes from.  We will show them how to fill the natural casings and also show them how to link them which is always good fun’

British Sausage Week starts on October 31st and runs for a week.  To find out more go to www.lovepork.co.uk
