Shropshire Chimney Sweep Reviving Ancient Wedding Tradition (20th January 2012)

Shropshire chimney sweep Stephen Grogan (from Whixall near Whitchurch) is reviving an ancient wedding tradition which says that a shake of the hand by a sweep on your special day brings good luck!

Mr Grogan started up his own chimney sweep business about three months ago so brides and grooms getting married in Shropshire can now be met by Stephen as they leave the church on their wedding day.

The tradition is thought to come from the story of King George II being saved by a chimney sweep when his coach and horses bolted. The King was so grateful that he announced by royal decree that all chimney sweeps were lucky.

For £80 Stephen will attend weddings in his attire, shake the groom’s hand, kiss the bride on the cheek, present the couple with a personalised poem and a lucky gift, and pose for photographs.

The married 51-year-old said he wanted to ‘bring old traditions to new beginnings’.
