Zdeněk Valkoun presents ‘orchids for beginners’ and ‘orchids for intermediates’ at the Dorothy Clive Garden (23rd January 2012)

Orchid aficionado and expert gardener, Zdeněk Valkoun, will be leading two illustrated talks - ‘Orchids for Beginners’ from 14.00-16.00 on Saturday 25th February 2012, and ‘Orchids for Intermediates’, on Sunday 26th February 2012 between 14.00-16.00 at The Dorothy Clive Garden.

Zdeněk’s illustrated talks will include practical advice for all aspects of year round care for orchids, the botany of orchids and how to grow commonly-available species /genera such as Dendrobium nobile and Blettila striata. There will also be practical advice on watering, potting, growing and a chance to re-pot a selection of the species. Zdeněk, who has set up a small collection of orchids in one of the glasshouses at the Dorothy Clive Garden, will provide the raw materials for a number of demonstrations which include how to water correctly.

Zdeněk Valkoun said, ‘Orchids are considered one of the most highly evolved plants on earth and there are over 25,000 naturally occurring species. I am fascinated by the form, variety and intricacy of the flowers as well as the complexity of the pollination process that happens between the plant and various insects. I have been studying orchids for over six years and feel a deep love and passion towards them.’

There will be an opportunity to pot your own orchid under Zdeněk’s supervision.  The event is open to the public at £15.00 and £12.00 for members of the Dorothy Clive Garden. This price includes a hot drinks and scone. This event has been promoted within the RHS Events booklet included with The Garden Magazine. RHS members will be admitted at the discounted rate of £12.00 per person. All participants are being asked to bring their own secateurs.
