Poetry for Youngsters at Shropshire Festival

(29th February 2012)

Youngsters across the county will be the focus of poetry and workshops at this year’s Wenlock Poetry Festival. The event, which will take place in Much Wenlock from April 13 to 15, features some of the best poets writing today with a line-up including Carol Ann Duffy, Liz Lockhead, Fiona Sampson and Nick Drake.

And in 2012 youngsters will be spoilt for choice with numerous events taking place just for them.

Poetry and workshops for children include the Much Random Poetry Generator Machine with Mandy Ross at 10.30am on the Saturday at the Edge Arts Centre, Chrissie Gittins Leaping Poems for seven to 11-year-olds at the centre at noon, followed by BewareExpectLookout with Mandy at 2pm and Children’s Poetry Reading with Jackie Kay at 3pm.

Much Wenlock Library will be the venue for Children’s Poetry Reading with Angela Topping at 2pm, also on the Saturday.

Festival organiser Anna Dreda said: “We think it is important for children to experience poetry in a fun and interesting setting so the festival is as much for them as it is for adults.

“Wenlock Poetry Festival is more than the festival itself. We are a poetry development project with a number of year-round activities and some very clear aims which we intend to deliver over the coming years. The Arts Council has expressed confidence in our ambitions for this and next year by awarding us a grant of £17,000.
“One of the projects we are working on is the Poetry in Schools development scheme to enable children and young people to work directly with established and emerging poets in schools in and around Much Wenlock and mid-Shropshire.”

Wenlock Poetry Festival is fast becoming one of the top poetry festivals in the UK. Though only in its third year, the event is already attracting some of the very best poets and performers writing and working today.
“At the same time we encourage performances by up-and-coming poets and we showcase our local poets too,” added Anna.
“As Carol Ann Duffy says, Much Wenlock is “the perfect place for poetry” and we prove it. The Festival this year has more than 50 events, including poetry performances and workshops along with a host of exciting poetry activities, exhibitions and celebratory events in our lovely town.”
