SHREWSBURY CARAVAN PARKS ON OLYMPIC TORCH ROUTE (4th May 2012)

Caravanners and motorhome owners staying at five star touring and holiday home parks in Shrewsbury on May 30 are in for an extra treat as the Olympic torch will be passing the entrance on its route through Shropshire.

The route between Oswestry and Broseley includes Bicton on the outskirts of Shrewsbury where Oxon Hall Touring Park and Oxon Pool Holiday Home Park are located. The Olympic torch is due to pass the parks’ access road en route to the town centre at 11.40am.

From Shrewsbury the torch convoy will pass through Cressage, Much Wenlock, Benthall and Broseley. A total of 11 Shropshire communities will welcome the Olympic flame as it makes its mammoth journey from Greece to the London 2012 Olympic Games.

“It’s fantastic news that the Olympic torch will be passing through Shrewsbury and we are especially pleased that the route is near to Oxon Hall Touring Park and Oxon Pool Holiday Home Park, which we own,” said Edward Goddard, managing director of Shrewsbury-based Morris Leisure.

“It will give visiting caravanners and local people a once in a lifetime chance to welcome the Olympic flame to Shropshire, share in the excitement of the relay and celebrate the fantastic achievements of the torchbearers.”

There will be a special welcome in the town of Much Wenlock, where Doctor William Penny Brookes founded the Wenlock Olympian Games in 1850 and inspired the revival of the modern Olympics in Athens in 1896.

The 70-day Olympic Torch Relay starts at Land’s End, Cornwall on the morning of  May 19 and will travel an estimated 8,000 miles around the UK.
