Ironbridge Gorge Museums Celebrate Top Award (22nd May 2012)

Ironbridge Gorge Museums has won one of the biggest awards in Europe for visitor attractions. The museum beat hundreds of applicants to scoop the top international award for their innovative approach to pulling in more business.

The award was made at a ceremony in London last week during the 2012 Museums & Heritage Awards for Excellence. Judges said the museum excelled in getting continued growth and developing it to sustain the attraction for the long-term future. The award was presented by comedienne and broadcaster Sue Perkins.

Barrie Williams, chairman of the Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust, said: “It is very encouraging that the hard work of the trustees, volunteers, staff and partners has been recognised in the form of a Museums & Heritage Classic Award, especially given the considerable strength of the shortlist.”

Now celebrating its 10th year, the annual awards recognise projects of excellence ranging from ground-breaking achievements of national institutions to those crafted with limited resources and budget.

The awards were judged by a panel of the sector’s leading lights including Diane Lees, director general at the Imperial War Museums, Bernard Donoghue, a director from the Association of Leading Visitor Attractions and other leading sector professionals.
