Prestigious Shropshire Art Exhibition Launched (8th June 2012)

Prestigious Shropshire Art Exhibition Launched

Ellesmere College successfully launched its inaugural National Art Exhibition and Sale of Works on Wednesday evening in the presence of over 300 invited guests.

The Lord Lieutenant of Shropshire, Algernon Heber-Percy, Patron of the exhibition, welcomed exhibitors and visitors to the preview evening, highlighting the contribution that this annual event will make to the Arts in Shropshire.

Old Ellesmerian, Martin Aitchison, who exhibited at the Royal Academy, will be guest of honour on Friday evening. His work includes technical drawings used for the development of the Bouncing Bomb; comic book illustration from the 1950s classic The Eagle; and illustration of more than 70 editions of Ladybird books.

His work is exhibited alongside that of 65 nationally renowned artists and sculptors including local artist and curator of the exhibition, Barbara Goolden, Thelma Ayre from Ludlow, John Humphries from Selattyn and members of the Royal Cambrian Academy of Arts.

The exhibition remains open until Sunday afternoon. Admission is free and members of the public will receive a warm welcome to this major event. Light refreshments, summer lunches and bistro suppers are available and visitors are encouraged to explore the splendid building, which opened as a school in 1884 and is regarded as one of Shropshire’s hidden treasures.

Nick Pettingale, Director of Development at Ellesmere College, said: “There is a wide and varied selection of original paintings and sculptures to view and to purchase. We hope that visitors will find what they are looking for to add to their collections or perhaps spot the perfect gift for a birthday or Fathers’ Day!”

The exhibition is open until 9pm on Friday, 11am to 9pm on Saturday, and from 11am to 2pm on Sunday. Further details can be found at www.ellesmere.com or by contacting Doris Taylor on 01691 626541 doris.taylor@ellesmere.com
