Hundreds of people turned out at The Square in Shrewsbury on Saturday to enjoy a curry in the sunshine and raise money for ABF The Soldiers’ Charity.

The Shrewsbury Big Curry took place on Saturday 21 July and raised £5,000 for the charity.  This money will help wounded soldiers and their families in Shropshire and the West Midlands with a proportion of the donation doing directly to the Personnel Recovery Unit in Shrewsbury.

The event was a ‘curry cook-off’ between the Army chefs from 143 (West Midlands) Brigade and the civilian chefs from the TASTE kitchen at the Shropshire Food Enterprise Centre.  This year it was the turn of the Army chefs to be voted as the winners marginally beating the TASTE kitchen chefs who won last year.

The two camps created different beef curries, with meat kindly donated by ABP Meats, and the public received a portion of both curries in exchange for a donation to the charity. They then voted for their favourite.

The event was organised by Nick Chavasse, Managing Director of NRG Direct Mail Ltd, a former Major in the British Army with support from HEART of ENGLAND fine foods (HEFF) and Shropshire Council with additional donations from Barclays Bank plc.

Mr Chavasse said: “The Shrewsbury Big Curry was once again a huge success so thank you to everyone who came along to support it and to ABP Meats and Barclays Bank plc for their generosity. I am delighted that we are able to hand over more than £6,000 to The Soldiers’ Charity.”
