5* Bed and Breakfast near Oswestry expands with the aid of a £5,000 Business Grant (4th March 2013)

Woolston House, situated just outside Oswestry have been successful in expanding their business to create an additional guest suite to the already successful B&B thanks to a £5,000 grant from the Shropshire and Herefordshire Business and Enterprise scheme towards this £20,000 capital project.

The building work started on this luxury 5 star rated B&B in October 2012 and was completed in December 2012. The work to this Georgian house was undertaken by local craftsman to create a third guest bedroom with en-suite luxury shower and dressing rooms. The additional bedroom will allow the business to expand into new markets, such as accommodating small house parties, shooting parties, leisure and business travellers. It is anticipated that the new facilities will generate an additional 290 additional overnight visitors into the area.

Owners Caroline Evans de Porras and Alberto Porras, purchased this lovely Georgian house in 2009 and quickly became the second luxury bed and breakfast in Shropshire marketed under the established and respected Wolsey Lodges brand, and were one of the first two businesses in the county to be awarded a Gold Award from Shropshire Tourism when their scheme was launched in 2012. Woolston House are members of Shropshire Tourism, Oswestry and Borderland Tourism and Britain's Finest. Initially two bedroom suites were created along with guest drawing and dining rooms and the Woolston Room - which can be hired for meetings, training or small functions. “We realised that having only two letting rooms was inhibiting growth, we were turning away business particularly parties visiting the area who wanted accommodation for more than four people, we decided to create this new suite out of two existing bedrooms that had not been included in the initial renovations” explained Caroline.

Cabinet Member for Business Growth and Prosperity, Cllr Mike Owen, said: “This is an excellent example of the Business and Enterprise fund helping businesses to expand bringing additional wealth into the area”.

Under the Shropshire and Herefordshire Business and Enterprise Fund Project, £1 Million was made available from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) to support Shropshire and Herefordshire Businesses.  This funding is still available to apply for contact 01743 252596 for more information. Grants of between £1,000 and £5,000 are available, which are required to be match funded by the business. For further information visit the website
