Cosford kick starts the summer (8th August 2014)

Cosford kick starts the summer

Summer has officially started at the Royal Air Force Museum Cosford with a brand new range of interactive 'August Activities' for families to enjoy throughout the school break.

Each week throughout August will have an exciting activity dedicated to it with the fun continuing into each weekend and even Bank Holiday Monday. With everything from building an Airfix model aeroplane to racing rocket cars on offer, there is something suitable for children of all ages.

Week 1 – Airfix Model Making

'Airfix Model Making' will kick start the August fun as families work together to build and paint an Airfix 1:72 scale Sopwith Pup, Albatros, Lightning or Hurricane model to take home. Running from 4th to 10th August between 11.00am and 3.00pm, this drop in make and take session will take place nestled in the heart of the Museum’s Hangar 1 next to the giant 1:1 Airfix Spitfire model built by TV presenter James May. Participation costs just £3.00 per person and all materials will be provided including the kit, glue and paint. (Not suitable for children under the age of 3, some children may require assistance. Models subject to availability).

Week 2 – Parachutes and Gliders

Feeling creative? Why not have a go at designing and making your very own ‘Parachute and Gliders’ during week two. Taking place from 11th to 17th August in Hangar 1, participants will have the chance to make paper gliders and test how well they fly. You can use the designs provided or try one of your own designs and see which flies best. Then get creative and have a go making a parachute and personalise its design. The morning session is from 11.00am - 12.30pm and the afternoon session between 1.00pm - 3.30pm and participation costs £1.00 per person.

Week 3 – Keyrings and Uniforms

From Monday 18th to Sunday 24th August, children can design and make a keyring which are ideal as gifts or a fun accessory to decorate a school bag. With a choice of shapes to choose from and plenty of accessories to personalise your keyring, this activity is perfect for children of all ages. All materials will be supplied and each child will get to take their keyring home as a memento of their day. Throughout week three there will also be the opportunity for children to try on a selection of RAF uniforms, some of which date back to World War Two. Participation in this activity costs £1.00 per person and sessions are from 11.00am to 12.30pm and 1.00pm to 3.30pm.

Week 4 – Rocket Cars

Rocket cars will be zooming into Cosford from 25th to 31st August and will be rounding off the summer activities at the Museum. During this week long activity we are inviting our younger visitors to design and build a K-Nex rocket car creation. This new summer activity will get families working together and having fun, plus if your completed car travels the distance set, each participant will get a sticker. The rocket cars activity sessions are from 11.00am to 12.30pm and 1.00pm to 3.30pm and participation costs £1.00 per child.

These creative and fun workshops will run each day until 31st August and all materials for these hands-on sessions will be provided by the Museum. Timings and prices for each activity vary per week; please check the Museum website for details. Tickets for each session will be available from the Admissions Desk on arrival at the Museum.
