Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre gets support for its Red Kite Experience (22nd August 2014)

Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre gets support for its Red Kite Experience

The team at the Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre were delighted to receive planning permission for a hide and associated fencing to attract Red Kites at their 30 acre site in the Onny Meadows, Craven Arms.

The application was approved at Shropshire Council’s planning committee this week and Centre Manager Valerie Meehan said "We are thrilled to get planning permission, it's a project that has taken over 2 years of planning, research and consultation. It was actually first suggested by a local ornithologist who felt the Discovery Centre with the Onny Meadows framed by the Iron Age hill fort of Norton Camp on Norton Hill would be a prime site for a Red Kite experience. There has been a lot of support for the project which initially is a pilot scheme with the primary aim of utilising it as an educational experience taking the form of a talk with question and answer sessions to be delivered by a member of our staff/trained volunteers at our hide. This form of interpretation will address the recovery, habits and future of the red kite and also present an opportunity to give a wider picture of wildlife conservation and to promote the interests of local groups."

Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre is now operated by Grow Cook Learn, a social enterprise connecting people to the food and the landscape of the Shropshire Hills, the centre continues to provide lifelong learning opportunities, the Red Kite experience will be launched in the autumn offering an immediate and interactive form of interpretation accessible to all visitors.
