A day of Feathers and Flight at Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre

The award winning visitor attraction Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre will be celebrating the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch on Saturday 24th January where visitors will be treated to a whole day dedicated to birds.

Visitors to the Discovery Centre just off the A49 in Craven Arms can get up close to Barns Owls, Tawny Owls and a Little Owl from Chelmarsh Owl Sanctuary. Gill Hales has spent many years rescuing owls and has just written a book ‘My family of owls’ signed copies will be available on the day.

Family activities on offer to keep the children entertained include building a bird box, making a willow nest, creating a kite and spotting birds in the 30 acres of meadows. Booking is advisable for the family activities, they are always very popular call 01588 676060 or visit

Catherine Collier, Marketing and Development Manager said 'We wanted to celebrate the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch and what better way than inviting visitors to come along and learn how to look after our British birds. RSPB will be on hand to give advice as well as workshops for making bird boxes and willow nests, in our 30 acres of Meadows we will provide bird spotting activities for families to explore and discover. Throughout the day visitors to the Discovery Centre will have a real treat - getting up close to the Great British Barn Owl.'

The Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre recently won the accolade 'Best Family Day Out – small venue' it offers a variety of activities for the whole family and houses a replica of the famous mammoth skeleton found in Shropshire. The café serves delicious home-cooked food and an extensive shop selling a range of quirky gifts. Every half term and summer holiday the visitor attraction provides hands-on family activities. Toddlers aren't left out either, each Tuesday activities specifically aimed at younger children encourage them to explore nature and get creative.
