Guided walk - medieval holloways and ancient lime trees (10th June 2015)

Guided walk - medieval holloways and ancient lime trees

A walk to discover the medieval holloways and lime trees planted by the monks of Wenlock Abbey. Join local arborist and walk leader, John Tuer, for a 7 mile walk on Wenlock Edge next Saturday 20 June.

John explains “We will be walking through the old mediaeval holloways found along Wenlock Edge and in search of the ancient lime trees planted by the monks of Wenlock Abbey, many of having been planted along the holloways. The abbey existed up to its dissolution in the mid-16th century, so the youngest of these trees are about 450 years old. Other ancient limes will be seen as former hedging trees and stand-alone trees that may have been parish boundary markers.”

The walk is in two parts and starts at 10.15 am at Presthope car park on Wenlock Edge (SO 583 975). This is a short walk to set the scene and explore the first holloway, then we drive onto Rushbury Village Hall car park (SO 510 926) for picnic lunch and 7-mile walk on Wenlock Edge. The walk is rough in places, with some climbs and stiles, so strong shoes or walking boots are necessary. The walk will finish by 5pm.

The walk is one of a series of guided walks led by volunteers on behalf of the Shropshire Hills AONB Partnership. Numbers limited so please book ahead by contacting the AONB Partnership, on 01588 674080 or email The cost is £3 or £2 for members of Friends of the Shropshire Hills AONB.
