Meet artist and author James Mayhew at Blists Hill Victorian Town (10th August 2015)

Meet artist and author James Mayhew at Blists Hill Victorian Town

Come and meet James Mayhew, well known illustrator and author of the much loved Katie series of children’s books at Blists Hill Victorian Town, near Ironbridge during the museum’s Victorian Childhood themed event from Tuesday 18th to Sunday 23rd August.

Dressed in full costume, James will become a late Victorian 'plein air' painter capturing an 'impression' of the Town's streets and buildings from a different location each day. Inspired by Turner, Steer, Singer-Sargent and Whistler, he will be using traditional oil paints, canvasses and an easel.

Chat to James and find out how artists worked during the Victorian era, then watch as he captures a scene, completing a fresh painting each day. Pop back later before going home and see how it turned out.

James is visiting the Victorian Town as part of their new "Victorian Childhood" week where you can have a go at traditional children's games such as musical chairs, sack races, hoops and skipping, bring your Teddy Bear for a picnic on the Green and follow a trail around the Town’s shops and houses to find characters from favourite children’s stories from the 1900s. The Prince Albert Players will also be performing the classic tale of Little Red Riding Hood; a definite must see.

Blists Hill Victorian Town is one of the ten Ironbridge Gorge Museums, which collectively won a top Gold Award in the Large Visitor Attraction of the Year category at the prestigious VisitEngland Awards for Excellence 2015.

The museum is open 10am to 5pm; a great value Annual Passport Ticket allowing unlimited entry into all ten Ironbridge Gorge Museums costs £27.95 per adult, £21.50 for seniors, £16.95 for children under 18, £68 for a family of two adults and all their children and £50 for a family with one adult; under 5s free (terms and conditions apply); Passports can also be bought online in advance saving 10% and individual entry tickets are available at each museum.
