Demand rises at Dana Prison, Shrewsbury, for Jail House Tours. (16th September 2015)

Demand rises at Dana Prison, Shrewsbury, for Jail House Tours.

The public tours were launched just over a month ago and in that time over 4,000 visitors have had a look around the former prison.

Bosses behind Jailhouse Tours at the Dana Prison today applauded the attraction and admitted they had not expected such a high level of demand.

From guided tours to prison escape challenges, this place is taking on all sorts of prisoners! In August, Jailhouse Tours started its 12-month lease operating the prison and hosting its tours in the historic building. The prison has also hosted paranormal investigations, school visits, historical days and team building activities. Plans are also in place for tunnel tours to give people the chance to see the Georgian prison from below, and a Zombie Run at Halloween.

The Dana prison was completed in 1793 and was named after Rev Edmund Dana (1739-1823).

The original building was built by Thomas Telford, following plans by Shrewsbury architect John Hiram Haycock and William Blackburn, an architect who designed many prisons. It was Blackburn who chose the site on which the prison is built.

Jailhouse Tours is the brainchild of Joel Campbell.
