Derelict coaching inn to Michelin guide in 18 months

Just 18 months after revamping an iconic Shropshire Coaching Inn, owners Mel and Martin Board have developed the site threefold, turning a dilapidated pub and barns into a Michelin Guide listed business

Once the old Corbett Arms now The Haughmond in Upton Magna, near Shrewsbury has expanded at a phenomenal rate since opening its doors a year and a half ago under its new ownership. In addition to the locally renowned Brasserie serving traditional British cuisine, The Haughmond business now includes five ensuite bed and breakfast rooms, The Village Store and Café, The Barn, and Basils Restaurant.

Mel and Martin saw the potential back in 2012 and bought the site with big plans in mind, “We always saw it as a multi-faceted business serving and employing the local community. But it’s gone from strength to strength in such a relatively short space of time, we never imagined we would achieve our five year plan within 18 months,” said Mel.

The newest area of the business, Basils Restaurant, opened on 18th September, where guests were treated to samples from the five-course taster menu with a complimentary wine flight matched by Tanners of Shrewsbury. This award winning restaurant has relocated from its original home in Wrockwardine Village and now resides from a newly renovated barn in the grounds of The Haughmond, with far reaching, unrivaled views over the Wrekin. This stunning location is also the home of the new function room where bookings for private parties, corporate events and weddings and Christmas are now being taken.

With each area of The Haughmond enterprise being such a worthy addition, from AA Rosette food and guest rooms achieving a 4* gold award to now being entered into the Michelin guide 2016, it’s no wonder this country pub is the talk of the town. The Haughmond is all about community too, with 18 of its staff being from Upton Magna village itself, creating a real sense of family. “Support from the local community has been over whelming,” explains Mel. “We want to thank all our staff and customers for sharing our vision.”
