Free admission for mothers on Mothering Sunday At Blists Hill Victorian Town, 6th March (1st February 2016)

Free admission for mothers on Mothering Sunday At Blists Hill Victorian Town, 6th March

Blists Hill Victorian Town, near Ironbridge, is inviting all mums to come as their guest on Sunday, 6th March when they can enjoy a Victorian-style Mother’s Day.

Admission to the Victorian Town will be free for mothers, when accompanied by another full-paying adult, on that day.

Find out how the wonderful Victorian costumes worn at the recreated Town are made and chat to one of skilled seamstresses on a tour of our Costume Department. You can also practice your origami skills and make your mother a paper flower along with a Mother’s Day card you’ve coloured yourself. Visit the cottages and see how this special day was celebrated in Victorian times. Watch the townsfolk demonstrate traditional Victorian crafts such as ragrugging and the beautiful art of decoupage.

To make the day extra special, pre-book mum a decadent Victorian High Tea, including a glass of Prosecco, delicious sandwiches, pastries and cream-filled scones along with a pot of Earl Grey tea for an additional £14.95 per person. Afternoon tea must be pre-booked by calling 01785 252247 or at

Other family activities include candle dipping – you can use Victorian techniques to make multi-coloured candles to take home; take part in a lesson in the School House at 12noon and join-in a sing-a-long in the New Inn at 1pm and 3pm.

In Victorian times Mothering Sunday was a special day when children working away in domestic service could return home to visit their mother and families. Although celebrated during Lent, fasting was relaxed and families could indulge in delicious rich foods and celebrations. Children were encouraged to bake a Simnel cake or pick flowers as a gift for their mothers; hence the evolution of present giving on Mothering Sunday.

Open 10am to 4pm Blists Hill is one of the ten Ironbridge Gorge Museums. Some activities carry an extra charge in addition to the museum admission fee.
