All Welcome to the Prees Heath 10th Anniversary Family Wildlife Event (13th May 2016)

All Welcome to the Prees Heath 10th Anniversary Family Wildlife Event

On 30th May 2006 Butterfly Conservation purchased the western half of Prees Heath Common near Whitchurch and started restoring the site following many years of neglect. Ten years on, the site is now thriving with wildlife.

It has become very popular with the public, and the restoration work has received widespread publicity. The nationally threatened Silver-studded Blue butterfly, the flagship species on the reserve, is doing particularly well with a more extensive area of heathland habitat now available for its caterpillars.

To celebrate this success, and to mark the Reserve’s 10th Birthday, Butterfly Conservation and the Meres & Mosses Landscape Partnership Scheme are hosting a family-friendly BioBlitz event on Sunday 29th May, starting at 2.00pm, open to the public and free of charge. A BioBlitz is an event to find as much wildlife in a day as possible on a site. Various experts will be on hand to help adults and children identify all the heathland wildlife, from birds, bees, minibeasts, moths, caterpillars and butterflies to wildlflowers, lizards, pondlife and mammals. A free BBQ will be available later, along with a marquee and portaloos, and in the evening we will be stargazing with Shropshire Astronomical Society and detecting bats. The event is designed to be especially suitable for families.
