New summer ‘Digital Days’ workshops for children at Enginuity Ironbridge Gorge Museums 1st – 18th August (29th July 2016)

New summer ‘Digital Days’ workshops for children at Enginuity Ironbridge Gorge Museums 1st – 18th August

A new series of ‘Digital Days’ teacher-led summer workshops for children aged 6 - 15 years is being hosted by Enginuity, the Ironbridge Gorge Museums’ design and technology discovery centre at Coalbrookdale, between 1st and 18th August. Previous experience is not essential for any of the sessions.

The first in the series is a two-day robotics project on 1st and 3rd August when children can construct their own programmable robot based on an EZ-Robot ‘Adventure bot’ and use it to complete a series of challenges. Accessories will also be designed and produced on Enginuity’s 3D printer ready to fit to the robots. Suitable for children aged 9 -15 years, the workshop will take place between 10am and 4pm on both days and is priced at £40.

On 4th and 16th August 6 -13 year olds can take part in Minecraft workshops. During the morning (10am-1pm) the youngsters will explore, play and discover the world of Minecraft within a safe and secure digital environment; once the basics have been mastered the session leader will set challenges and competitions. In the afternoon (2pm-5pm) the children will learn how to build and programme virtual working machines using a range of advanced blocks including Redstone. Previous experience would be beneficial for the afternoon workshops. Each morning or afternoon session is £20 per child, or book the full day at just £30 for both sessions.

Two days of LEGO workshops are also planned on 5th and 17th August. On 5th August, either 10am-1pm or 2-5pm children aged 6 – 13 years will work with motorised LEGO WeDo kits to build and programme a variety of machines. Meanwhile on 17th August, again either 10am-1pm or 2-5pm, older children aged 9 – 14 years will be working with LEGO MindStorms to construct and programme a robot to solve a variety of problems including mazes, moving objects and racing. Priced at £20 per session, both workshops use a programming language similar to Scratch.

Finally on 18th August a Claymation workshop will explore how to tell a story through animation. Children will create backdrops, figures and objects then add their own sounds and voice overs to complete short films which can be shared or uploaded online. Suitable for 6 – 13 year olds, this session will take place between 10am and 4pm and is priced at £30 per child.

All the Enginuity Digital Day workshops must be booked in advance and prepaid by calling 01952 433970, email or online at

Parents are welcome to leave their children at the workshops or stay and take part along with their child. As food and drink are not provided, children should also bring their own refreshments.
