Mammoth Weekend - Family Fun Weekend Celebration

To celebrate the discovery of the Shropshire Mammoth 30 years ago, The Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre will be hosting a Mammoth Weekend of family fun with lots of exciting events for everyone.

8th October - The Shropshire Mammoth - A talk by Dr Adrian Lister at 6pm

Find out about the amazing discovery of the Condover mammoth 30 years ago and its significance from expert, Dr Adrian Lister of the Natural History Museum. This talk will be followed by a buffet reception attended by others involved in the original project. Cost £15 per person Please book early to avoid disappointment


8th and 9th October -Mammoth Weekend – Family Fun Weekend 10am – 5pm

Join us for a weekend of family fun and talks to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the discovery of our Mammoth.

FREE EXHIBITION ENTRY ALL WEEKEND 10am—5pm (last entry 4.15pm)

Meet the Condover mammoth with our Education Team to discover how he died and what we can learn about him from his skeleton (Saturday 11am, 2pm, 3.30pm & Sunday 11.30am, 4pm).

Follow the Mammoth Facts Trail in the exhibition. Go Mammoth tracking in the meadows and find footprints, fur and droppings!


Saturday 8th October - Half-hour bookable sessions for children at £2 per session

Fascinating Forensics—piece together a rodent skeleton from an owl pellet (12pm, 3pm)

Munchable Mammoths—decorate your own mammoth biscuit (1pm, 4pm)


Sunday 9th October - Half-hour bookable sessions for children at £2 per session

Sunday 9th October - A talk by Stephanie Bellows 2.00—3.00pm Bones and what they can tell us

Take a look at the human skeleton and compare the bones to those of different animals. Then take a whirlwind trip through other information we can get from skeletons from facial reconstruction to the location an individual grew-up. Stephanie Bellows, an osteoarchaeologist will share her enthusiasm for bones.Cost £3 per person


Come down and explore the Meadows, free entry to the Discovery Centre but we want visitors to enjoy our Secret Hills exhibition and visit our mammoth. You can easily spend a day here with our popular Sunday lunches and homemade desserts’. The Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre offers an extensive programme of family events, adult courses and a variety of activities for the whole family. The unique grass roofed building houses a replica of the famous mammoth skeleton found in Shropshire. The café serves delicious home-cooked food and an extensive shop selling a range of quirky gifts.
