Shropshire Way 80K postponed due to weather (19th March 2018)

Shropshire Way 80K postponed due to weather

Weather called to a halt to the Shropshire Way 80K, mass participation walk this weekend. The staff at Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre were forced to postpone the event, which takes in some of the finest parts of the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, due to the weather warnings for snow, wind and ice.

Bookings for the event, which will now be held over Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th April 2018, have reopened. Participants should contact the Centre to book.

The route is 80km (50 miles) in length with the aim being to complete the circuit in less than 24 hours. Starting and finishing at Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre, the home of Grow Cook Learn, this walk will take you through the very best of Shropshire’s amazing, undiscovered landscape and some of its hidden market towns. Along the way, as competitors pass through check points, they will be able to sample some of the wonderful local produce that this area has to offer and will be treated to a delicious breakfast upon their return to the Centre.

Centre Manager, Grant Wilson, says:

“Looking at the weather conditions we encountered, there is no doubt that postponing the event was the right thing to do. The safety of all involved had to be our main priority. The event will now take place in an identical format over the weekend of April 28th and 29th. All entrants will be able to defer their entry to this new date but if this is not possible, we will offer refunds.

After many years of taking part in and marshalling similar events to this all over Europe, I have long been formulating an idea about staging a long distance event of my own in the Shropshire Hills. Finally now, with the support of Grow Cook Learn, I am in a position to bring my idea to life.

My two passions are walking and running through the Shropshire Hills and eating the food that this amazing landscape produces. This event is my attempt to share my love for this special place and its food with like-minded people locally, nationally and internationally.”
